When the travel writer Trevor Fishlock went to my hometown of Patna, a journalist greeted him by saying, “Welcome to hell.” A few days later, that particular journalist, who had been zealous in his defense of the freedom of the press, was beaten unconscious.

I read the above story in a piece by Norman Lewis titled “Through the Badlands of Bihar.” But it is not only Western visitors like Mr. Fishlock and Mr. Lewis who portray Patna thus. If you have been keeping track of recent Bollywood movies,the bad lands of bihar have become fertile ground for reaping cinematic violence.

history of kadapa district

A historical city Kadapa was a part of the Chola Empire from 11^th to 15^th century. It was conquered in 1565 by the Muslims and years after, by the British, in 1800. The relics built during the Muslim rule can still be seen, most famous being two towers and the Dargah. The famous Qutub Shahi commander Neknam Khan extended the region and called it as 'Neknamabad'. However, the entire region was not given the same name. Around 18^th century the town went into the hands of Mayana rulers and they ruled the region as the Nawabs of Kadapa.

Over a period of time, around 1800 AD, Kadapa became the headquarters of one of the subordinate Collectors under Principal Collector, Major Munro.
