A historical city Kadapa was a part of the Chola Empire from 11th to 15th century. It was conquered in 1565 by the Muslims and years after, by the British, in 1800. The relics built during the Muslim rule can still be seen, most famous being two towers and the Dargah. The famous Qutub Shahi commander Neknam Khan extended the region and called it as 'Neknamabad'. However, the entire region was not given the same name. Around 18th century the town went into the hands of Mayana rulers and they ruled the region as the Nawabs of Kadapa.
Over a period of time, around 1800 AD, Kadapa became the headquarters of one of the subordinate Collectors under Principal Collector, Major Munro.
